Panchamabhoot (The Five Elements)

Ayurveda, as a way of life, believes that individuals are not just made up of carbohydrates, amino acids and minerals, but also as psychological and spiritual beings with Prana or energy that sustains life. " सर्वम् द्रव्यं पांचभौतिकम् अस्मिन् अर्थे !" Ayurveda believes that all living and non-living things are made up of Panchmahabhoot ( five elements) namely Aakash ( Space/ Ether), Vayu( Air), Tejas ( Fire), Apa ( Water) and Prithvi( Earth). " यावन्त: देहे तावन्तो लोके !" Man is the microcosm of the macrocosm. The universe provides the macro ecology while the human body is the tiny replica of it. Our body is made up of these five elements and upon death dissolves back into these five elements in nature. Our five senses of sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste are based on these five primary elements—fire, air, space, earth and water respectively—and therefore our respective sense organs—eyes, skin, ears, nose, and tongue—function based on them. These 5 elements combine with each other to form the three humors Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Ayurveda focuses on establishing harmony between these, both internally and externally for achieving good health. Aakash (The Space Element) Space is the medium for sound to travel. It is present in the hollowness of empty intestines, bladder, bowel, blood vessels and lungs. In addition to governing our auditory senses it is responsible for our intuition and wisdom. It is formed from Shabd tanmatra which is the tanmatra of sound. An imbalance of space elements in the body can manifest as thyroid issues, or problems related to speech or hearing, etc. Vayu ( Air Element) Air is the element of movement. Dry and light in nature, the air element is formless and transparent. It originates from Sparsha, the tanmatra of touch. So, skin is the sense organ of Air. In our body, it is synonymous with Prana ( life energy). It is present in the movements of muscles and joints, pulsations of heart, expansion and contraction of lungs and the stomach and intestines. The entire nervous system is governed by Air. Its imbalance leads to nervous system related disorders, respiratory issues, abnormal blood pressure and pains in muscles. Tejas (The Fire Element) Fire is the element of transformation. It originates from Roopa, the tanmatra of vision.It represents the Jatharagni( digestive fire), Dhatwagni (seven dhatus) and Bhootagni ( if five elements). Digestion, absorption, and assimilation of food as well as regulation of body temperature are taken care of by this element. It also activates the retina which perceives light. It also manifests as intelligence. An imbalance in the fire element manifests in the form of metabolic disorders, mental ailments, visual disturbances, skin diseases, fever, etc. Apa (The Water Element) Water is present in our body in the form of all bodily fluids including saliva, digestive juices, blood, sweat and semen. It is water that governs our emotions and also makes cohesion possible in everything including tissues. Apa originates from Rasa tanmatra. The sense of taste is perceived by Apa mahabhoot. Humans are predominantly made up of this element. When out of balance, we face digestive, reproductive, weight issues, etc. Prithvi (The Earth Element) Earth represents solid matter and gives form to all things. Earth forms all the solid structures in our body—bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons, teeth, nails, skin and hair. The nature of earth elements is hard, stable, slow, dry, heavy, and thick. It is formed from Gandha tanmatra and enables sense of smell. Imbalance of the earth element leads to weight gain or loss, weakness, increased cholesterol, bone density changes, etc.
According to Ayurveda, the human body is composed of these five elements in different proportions, with each individual having a unique combination that determines their physical and mental characteristics. The balance or imbalance of these elements in the body influences a person's health and well-being.
Ayurvedic treatments and lifestyle recommendations aim to restore and maintain the balance of these elements in the body, which promotes optimal health. This is done through various methods such as diet, herbs, massage, yoga, and meditation.
