In Ayurveda, the digestion of food and metabolism or gut health is described in terms of ' Agni'. Agni is responsible for absorbing the nutrients and essential elements the body needs while burning off waste products. If our Agni is strong, we’re able to digest food efficiently and easily. On the other hand, if Agni is weak, our body won’t digest the ingested food item well, creating toxic residue or Ama( endotoxins) that lodges deep in our cells.

In Ayurveda, impaired Agni or gut health is considered the root cause of all diseases. Agni varies with age, season, place, prakriti( dosha type) and vikruti (diseased condition). Agni is one of the ten factors which are required to be examined before initiating the treatment of patients. If digestive fire is not functioning properly, one has poor digestion, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, sour eructation, heaviness in abdomen, languid blood-circulation, poor complexion, low energy levels, skin issues, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, emotional disturbances and poor immunity against diseases. Even if we eat well-balanced diet or take health supplements for good health, they may not be absorbed by our body. Thus, the proper functioning of digestive system and in turn our overall health status depends not just on what we eat but what we can actually digest of what we eat.
